Ibiza officials will be working with Airbnb to crack down on illegal tourist holiday rentals.
In a 20th February announcement, Consell d’Eivissa (Ibiza’s Island Council) confirmed signing a “historic” and “unprecedented” agreement with Airbnb and other local tourism groups in an attempt to regulate White Isle short-term lets that “operate on the margins of legality”, The Independent reports. The move is part of ongoing anti-overtourism actions like fining tourists up to £2,580 for breaking public alcohol consumption rules in San Antonio and local residents blocking off access to the famous Es Vedrà rock formation to tourists.
In a little over two weeks, more than 300 Ibiza accommodation listings have been removed from the site. “Multi-family homes” with spare rooms, camping outside of official campsites and other spaces not listed by the council.
The agreement was signed by Consell d’Eivissa leader Vicent Mari and Airbnb’s Spanish director Jaime Rodriguex de Santiago. Mari said the collaboration is “a milestone in the roadmap that we set out more than five years ago to lead a relentless fight against the island’s unregulated [tourist rental] supply”.
The other Ibiza tourism groups to sign the agreement are Ibiza Tourist Accommodation Association, the Ibiza and Formentera Hotel Business Federation and promotion company Fomento del Turismo.
Last May, more than 10,000 people marched against overtourism and its impact on residents in demonstrations in the Balearic and Canary Islands.
