Indie songwriter Peter Doherty returns to solo duties with new album ‘Felt Better Alive’.
The singer is a key part of the Libertines, with the UK band sharing their fourth studio album ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ last year. Hitting No. 1, our reviewer wrote:
‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’, with its war-novel-brought-to-Margate title, still borrows generously from the rich histories The Libertines have always told stories about; both their own Odyssean relationships, and their reflections on more detached times gone by. But on ‘All Quiet…’, we hear indie music’s prodigal hedonists-slash-heroes looking outward at today’s politicians, wars and crises for the first time.
Clearly in creative mode, Peter Doherty has just confirmed plans for his first solo album in nine years. Featuring 11 songs, the record is in calming, reflective territory, with the songwriter sharing lead single ‘Felt Better Alive’.
Jaunty folk-hewn indie song craft, the track comes with a video which opens with Peter Doherty being washed up on the shores of Albion. He comments…
“It’s quite bouncy, quite country. ‘Dredging the mouth of the Humber’ is a line from Hancock [about coagulated sprinkled sugar in the bottom of a bowl of cornflakes]. The chorus I love, ‘And I’d always planned/To sing in a sweet and soulful way as only cowboys can/But my saddle strap snapped like a dog-chewed tourniquet…’It’s an accurate description of how I feel about certain times in my life, y’know? Treasures of the Sierra Mardre: you set off on this mission for the gold and you just ended up lost in the mountains, being hunted by bandits.”
