Self Esteem will release her new album ‘A Complicated Woman’ on April 25th.
The songwriter – real name Rebecca Lucy Taylor – found huge success with her 2021 album ‘Prioritise Pleasure’; nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, she toured the biggest venues of her life, criss-crossing the country.
Taking time out – she starred in a lavish Cabaret production, amongst other projects – she returned to Self Esteem duties with a bold, Moonchild Sanelly-bolstered single at the end of 2024.
Time for a new album, then. Out on April 25th, ‘A Complicated Woman’ finds Self Esteem joined by a number of guests, aligning to create a rainbow of femme power.
Running through the record, you can locate a choir constructed of a plethora of mostly female voices; dubbing it “a community of people. I want you to hear and feel the connection”, the roll call includes Nadine Shah, Moonchild Sanelly, and Sue Tompkins from cult Scottish group Life Without Buildings. Alongside this, you’ll find the drag queen Meatball and Corrie icon Julie Hesmondhalgh aka Hayley Cropper.
New single ‘Focus Is Power’ is out now. The initial sketch was penned on a sticker, during a spell working from her mum and dad’s shed in the pandemic – “You see, it wasn’t up to me but now it could be / But now I see it clear with every passing of each year / I deserve to be here…”
Tune in now.
