The Open Flames return with new song ‘Same Time Next Year’.
The London four-piece arrive with tonnes of experience, with each member boasting an extensive CV. With this project, however, they put all that to one side, aiming to channel something new, and something a little bit fresh.
A full album is incoming, and it depicts their growth – friends in high school, each musician went their separate way, before rediscovering one another in later life.
The band is the means for that friendship to re-define itself, with their songwriting ringing out with prime indie rock influences – think early R.E.M. or PIXIES at their more melodic and you’d be close.
Based in and around Camden, the North London group also have a theatrical side, inhabiting characters within their lyrics; in that sense, we can hear shades of groups like The Lemon Twigs in their work.
Singer/guitarist David Eastman builds lyrical narratives that he and co-vocalist Paige Brubeck then riff off, and new single ‘Same Time Next Year’ is the perfect example of this.
Dulcet in tone, jagged in execution, it’s a punchy indie rock jewel, one that feels both secure in its identity, but also questing.
“This album is about growing into a band together,” says Sult. “It started as a friendship being rekindled. Since our lives diverged in high school, David has been living literally all over the world, experiencing some seriously unreal conditions in developing countries and rich countries alike.”
“I’ve been on major labels, indie labels, and generally leading a rock and art life all around the US with Paige. But he’s the guy who got me playing music in the first place. So when he sent me a song and I knew just what it needed, it felt like we could complete the circuit and work together at last. The title literally describes how we pulled it off, jumping into a studio in London’s Camden Town whenever we had a free moment.”
